In Greece, laurel is known since ancient times and was found in Homer. It was considered a sacred tree, that was dedicated to the God Apollo. Already in Ancient Greece, winners were crowned with laurel wreath. Laurel stood for fame, victory and supremacy. A tradition that was followed by the Romans. Still today the laurel wreath is the highest sports award in Germany 'Silberne Lorbeerblatt'. Ancient Greece also appreciated the healing power of the laurel, which was known for its therapeutic properties. So it is said that the High Priestess of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi chewed laurel leaves before she spoke the oracle.
